Former Iowa Congressional Candidate J.D. Scholten Joins One Country Project Board

One Country Gains Long-Time Rural American Democrat

Washington, D.C. – Tessa Gould, Executive Director of the One Country Project issued the following statement after President Donald Trump announced his commitment to year-round E15 sales Friday.

“J.D.’s values are what make him a great fit for our board,” said founding member Heidi Heitkamp. “He rides on faith, farming, and doing what it takes to protect all communities. In short, he’s a real leader who understands that we have to lead and govern for one country.”

Scholten began his career as a litigation paralegal and professional baseball player – playing for his hometown Sioux City Explorers, among other domestic and international teams. A lifelong Democrat, Scholten ran for Congress in Iowa’s 4th district in 2018 against incumbent Congressman Steve King. Though Scholten was narrowly defeated, his campaign shed light on the rural priority issues we care about at One Country and set an example for other Democrats running in rural communities across the United States.

In addition to purchasing his childhood home, Scholten still runs a family farm outside of Lake Mills, Iowa – a factor he credits for influencing his run for office. Scholten also recently launched the nonprofit organization “Working Hero Iowa” which is dedicated to educating and assisting Iowans who are eligible for the earned income tax credit.

“Finding ways to help Iowa is what is most important to me and I want to make sure that the next generation of Iowans is able to thrive both economically and environmentally,” said Scholten. “I don’t need to run for office to be able to help rural Americans.”
