One Country Project Statement on Supreme Court Decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization

Washington, D.C. – Today, One Country Project founder and former Senator Heidi Heitkamp released the following statement on the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization that reverses the historic decision in Roe v Wade:

“Today’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court is an assault on women and families in America, especially those in rural America. Women living in rural counties will be disproportionately impacted by the overturning of Roe v Wade, as they already have limited access to health care.

This decision will permeate our social, healthcare, and economic structures to a degree which we have not even begun to grapple with. Abortion may be the topline issue today but make no mistake the underlying socioeconomic implications of this decision are far-reaching and undercut women’s potential and our economy in a big way.

This ruling has put in place scenarios where a woman that has a miscarriage could not only have to deal with the incredible physical and emotional toll of losing a potential child, but the reality of being put behind bars because her body and nature took its course. This is a scary time to be a woman in America.

The COVID-19 pandemic shined a spotlight on the challenges our society and women, particularly those in the workforce, face when it comes to raising children. Yet, instead of advancing policies that address equal pay and paid family leave, we have taken a monumental step backwards. For nearly 50 years the implications of Roe v. Wade have equipped women with the right to choose and those reproductive choices have now been stripped away.

Today is a sad day for women in America, and we hope that women and those that love and appreciate them show up in November to vote for leaders that will put in place policies and laws that ensure their health and value are protected.”
