One Country Statement on May 2022 Jobs Report

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, One Country Project founder and former Senator Heidi Heitkamp issued the following statement after the release of the May jobs report:

“The U.S. economy continues to hold steady employment rates, sending a signal about the sound state of our economy. In May, the United States added 390,000 jobs, holding the line with a consistently low unemployment rate.

“Unfortunately, wage growth has been more limited, which does not pair well with rising inflation. The pace of annual growth in average hourly earnings has fallen now for three months, making it hard for Americans to take care of their essential needs. This is unsustainable and the public and private sectors must work together to ensure every working American earns a living wage.

“Rising economic insecurity - specifically food insecurity - in the U.S. and across the globe is a threat to our communities. President Biden took steps this week to lay out his plan to fight inflation and broken supply chains in a Wall Street Journal op-ed. The Department of Agriculture committed to large investments that will strengthen food systems in rural communities. But for our economy to have a positive trajectory the public and private sectors will need to take targeted actions in response to economic shifts.”
