One Country Statement on April 2023 Jobs Report

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, One Country Project issued the following statement after the release of the April Jobs Report:

The addition of 253,000 jobs in April continues the U.S. economy’s more stable growth after a period of unprecedented recovery under the Biden administration that created 12.7 million jobs. 3.1 million of those were created by small businesses – a boom that is a testament to the effectiveness of Democrats’ policies such as the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act.

“Despite the continued efforts by President Biden and Democrats in Congress to provide opportunities for success for everyday Americans, the GOP continues to push ahead with their reckless plan that holds the debt limit hostage in order to slash vital funding for small businesses, veterans’ programs, nutrition assistance, and other critical support that rural communities rely upon.

Most Americans – across party lines – agree that the debt limit should be lifted separately from federal spending negotiations. The unemployment rate remains historically low at 3.4 percent, but this extremist Republican plan would greatly increase the risk of debt default as soon as a month from now, accompanied by a disastrous recession and the loss of 780,000 jobs.

“Though inflation is easing, many Americans, particularly in rural areas, continue to see high prices just as pandemic-era expansions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid come to an end, putting greater strains on Americans working hard to provide for their families. As the debt negotiations continue, the One Country Project is dedicated to advocating for policies that ensure rural Americans’ voices are heard and protect their opportunities for success.”
