North Carolina Representative Ashton Clemmons Joins One Country Project Board

One Country Gains Champion for Underserved Communities

WASHINGTON, D.C.  The One Country Project today announced the addition of North Carolina House of Representatives member Ashton Clemmons to its board.

“Rep. Ashton Clemmons is a dedicated public servant who offers a deep knowledge of what it takes to uplift underserved communities,” said One Country Project founding member and former North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp. “She has tenaciously sought to improve the lives of her students as a public school principal and assistant superintendent, and since winning a resounding victory in the 2018 midterms has extended her advocacy beyond public education to champion health care, the environment, and voting rights. We are so happy to welcome Rep. Clemmons to the One Country family to continue fighting on behalf of rural communities across the nation.”

"Leadership is needed in our state and country to bring people together to solve problems. I am thrilled to join One Country in their important work to bring together the voices of rural and urban neighbors. In North Carolina we know that our state, and country, can only move forward when people from rural and urban areas work together for what is right for all," said Rep. Ashton Clemmons.

Rep. Clemmons made her mark in public education as the principal of Oak Hill Elementary School, which went from having the lowest performance record in a district of 125 schools to being named North Carolina Title One School of the Year under her leadership. In 2018, she won a decisive 68 percent of the vote to represent her home state’s 57th House district. She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
