One Country Statement on May Jobs Report
Trump’s Tax Con and Trade War Are Taking a Toll on American Workers
Washington, D.C. – Heidi Heitkamp, Founding Board Member of the One Country Project, issued the following statement after the Department of Labor issued its May jobs report, which showed the economy created only 75,000 jobs, underperforming economist forecasts by around 105,000 – a significant drop from last month’s generally bullish April jobs report.
“As resilient as American workers are, they cannot stop President Trump’s reckless policies from wreaking havoc on our economy. Today’s jobs report shows that job growth has screeched to a near halt for those in construction, manufacturing, and agricultural industries, which together added fewer than 500 jobs and are bearing the brunt of President Trump’s poor decisions. The bill has come due for the Trump tax scam that put a trillion dollars of debt on our national credit card without putting money in workers’ pockets. And his trade war is turning farms and rural communities into casualties.
“We need the president to stop threatening the livelihoods of Americans across the country with his trade policies and work to stabilize the agriculture and manufacturing markets that power America’s rural communities.”
