One Country Statement on August 2025 CPI Report
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, One Country Project (OCP) issued the following statement on the August Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics:
“In August, the Consumer Price Index increased 2.9% over the last 12 months, showing an acceleration in inflation, beating economists’ expectations by 0.1%. Core inflation took the biggest jump showing the true impact of President Trump’s import taxes. Data showed that day-to-day costs also increased at a faster rate, with food costs increasing by 3.2% from a year ago. Additionally, the Department of Labor reported an increase in weekly unemployment compensation filings to 263,000, the highest since October 2021.
“These CPI figures will come as no surprise to everyday Americans. They simply confirm what people have been feeling for months: the cost of living is rising, and there’s no clear end in sight. Even among President Trump’s base, frustration is mounting. Loyal supporters are still with him — but they’re calling for action. The problem for the president is that many don’t see a rate cut as a real solution. While short-term relief would be welcome, there's widespread concern that it would only fuel further inflation down the line.
“The August CPI report shows legitimate signs of the American economy weakening as a result of the administration’s aggressive approach on tariffs and economic strategy. One Country Project urges the administration to reevaluate its economic approach and prioritize stabilizing the economy for all Americans.”
