One Country Project Statement on June CPI Report

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, One Country Project Founder and Chair former U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp issued the following statement on the June Consumer Price Index (CPI) Report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics:

“In June, the Consumer Price Index increased 2.7% from a year ago, reflecting an across the board increase that consumers are seeing in food, housing and durable goods. The 0.3% month-over-month increase from May is slightly higher than economists had forecast. Notably, the 3% increase in the price of food reflected the cost of President Trump’s tariffs beginning to hit consumers wallets.

“These economic numbers show clear signs that the president’s tariffs and trade war are impacting the American economy. Prices will likely continue to rise over the next few months as President Trump has threatened to unleash more tariffs against the European Union and numerous other countries on August 1.

“One Country Project remains dedicated to reopening dialogue with rural communities, rebuilding trust and respect, and advancing an opportunity for rural Americans. The recent CPI report is compounded by the continued uncertainty in the labor market. The mixed signals in last month’s employment numbers indicate that our economy is in a vulnerable and unpredictable state. We call on the administration to redirect its economic strategy toward supporting American businesses and local economies, rather than bullying our trade partners and dismantling the trade system that powers the U.S. economy.”
