One Country Statement on May 2024 Jobs Report

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, One Country Project issued the following statement after the release of the May jobs report:

“The labor market has steadily grown under the Biden administration, with employment increasing by 272,000 jobs in May. May’s robust report reflects the resilience of the economy, and the opening opportunities for American workers. Wages are growing more quickly than inflation, giving a boost to younger workers and low-wage workers’ paychecks, in particular, helping to ease the costs of living. It’s especially promising to see such a strong increase in health care jobs, in an industry that has struggled with workforce shortages. Yet provider shortages still require more attention, especially in rural areas in health care deserts that suffer from a lack of access to health services.

“Unfortunately, even when health services exist, accessing care can be difficult. Paid family and medical leave policies can help ensure that workers and their families can attend doctor’s appointments and get essential care, while retaining their job security. A majority of voters would be more likely to support a candidate who advocates for a national paid leave program, a pro-worker and pro-family policy. During this critical election year, lawmakers must pay attention to the needs of working Americans and continue to work towards bolstering their well-being and economic security.”
