One Country Statement on July 2023 Jobs Report

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, One Country Project issued the following statement after the release of the July jobs report:

“The addition of 187,000 jobs in July is evidence of a cooling economy, accompanied by cooling inflation to the lowest level in two years, after a record rebound from the Covid-19 pandemic. However, everything else is heating up. American workers today continue to face unprecedented challenges due to the climate crisis, persistently high costs on everyday goods, and political standoffs, which this week resulted in a downgrade of the U.S. overall credit rating.

“Extreme heat threatens workers, particularly those in exposed industries such as agriculture, construction, mining, and service. President Biden is taking historic steps to ensure these workers’ health and safety through the first-ever Hazard Alert, which offers protections from increasingly high heat in the summer months. While this is an important step to protect workers’ well-being and the economy in the face of a worsening climate crisis, 70 percent of Republicans say that climate change is a minor threat or no threat at all.

“Excessive heat, drought, torrential rain, floods, and other extreme weather events have already been affecting agriculture and are costing the country billions of dollars, leaving no question that mitigating climate change is necessary for our health and economic well-being. With the Farm Bill reauthorization on the horizon, it is critical that Congress take swift action to secure America’s farming foundation, preserve the rural way of life, and making the nation’s rural economy viable and vibrant. Our farmers and farmworkers are feeling the heat out in the fields – now Congress must feel the heat to pass a Farm Bill that works for them.”
