One Country Statement on Q3 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) Growth

Trump's Fact-Free Tweets and Misguided Trade Wars Do Not Benefit Economic Growth

WASHINGTON, D.C. Heidi Heitkamp, Founding Board Member of the One Country Project, issued the following statement after the Bureau of Economic Analysis announced Q3 GDP growth, which showed the GDP grew by 1.9 percent – down from 2 percent in Q2 and 3.1 percent in Q1.

“From his very first day in office, President Trump has taken credit for the economy. Just like his empty promise to revive the manufacturing and coal mining industries in Midwest, however, his boasts of exponential economic growth ring hollow. The ISM manufacturing index has fallen for the sixth month in a row and is at its lowest level since the end of the Great Recession.

“The economy is clearly slowing, due in part to Trump’s trade war which continues to devastate farmers and manufacturers across the country. Trump’s reputation as a failed businessman seems to have preceded him – and this slowdown reflects a steady decline in business investment.

“Just as the president blames turbines for cancer, he is likely to find an equally ridiculous target to blame his inability to measure up to his unearned sense of financial acumen. But the business community and voters are wising up to his bluster. The president has, once again, failed to deliver on his economic promise to America.”
